Diagnosis Checklist
When rankings are not improving after content publication:
- [ ] Do the new pages have internal links to and from related pages?
- [ ] Do the new pages reference the brand entity explicitly?
- [ ] Is the schema on new pages consistent with other pages on the site?
- [ ] Are service, location, and person entities cross-linked where relevant?
- [ ] Does supporting content exist around the core service entities?
If three or more of these are missing, the entity foundation is incomplete.
Competitor Outranking Despite Worse Content
This is the most common complaint and clearest argument for entity SEO.
Root cause: The competitor's site has stronger entity clarity — Google trusts the competitor for the category even if their individual pages are thinner.
Fix:
- Run the Keyword vs Entity Audit on the competitor site
- Identify where they have stronger entity signals (internal linking, schema, supporting content)
- Close the gap in the client's site
Client Education: "Keywords Are Dead"
Never agree with this framing.
Correct response: "Keywords still matter. Entity SEO adds context and relationships around those keywords. It's an upgrade, not a replacement."
Entity SEO and keywords are complementary. Clients who believe keywords are dead may under-invest in the keyword targeting component that still drives discovery.
